Where trade enquiries actually come from
For most UK trades, the map pack — the three local results with the map above the normal listings — produces more enquiries than everything else on the page combined. Someone searching "emergency plumber near me" on a phone rarely scrolls past it.
That means your Google Business Profile is not a supporting asset. For local search it is the primary one, and your website's main job is to support it and to convert the traffic it sends.
Google Business Profile: the fundamentals
- Claim and fully complete it. Every field. Categories, services, hours, service area, attributes, description.
- Primary category precision matters enormously. "Plumber" and "Heating contractor" produce different results. Pick the one that matches the work you actually want.
- Service area set realistically. Absurdly wide service areas dilute relevance for the places you actually work.
- Photos, regularly. Real jobs, real vans, real team. Profiles with recent photos consistently outperform dormant ones.
- Post weekly. Short updates, offers, completed jobs. It is a small signal but the competition mostly is not doing it.
- Answer questions and reviews. Every review, positive and negative, ideally within a day.
Reviews: the single strongest lever
Review count, average rating and recency together form the clearest differentiator between the businesses in the map pack and the ones below it. And unlike most ranking factors, this one is entirely within your control.
The problem is never that customers are unwilling. It is that nobody asks, or nobody asks at the right moment. Ask when the job is finished and the customer is visibly pleased — not three weeks later by email.
Automating the request on job completion is the single highest-return SEO action available to most trade businesses, and it takes about an hour to set up.
Service pages beat a services list
A single page listing eleven services ranks for none of them. A page per service, each properly written around how people actually search, ranks for all of them.
For a plumber that means separate pages for emergency plumbing, boiler installation, bathroom fitting, leak detection, power flushing and so on. Each one needs real content: what the job involves, what it typically costs, how long it takes, what you need from the customer.
Area pages: useful, and easy to get wrong
Pages for the areas you serve genuinely help you rank beyond your immediate postcode. But there is a line between a legitimate local page and a doorway page, and Google has been enforcing it for years.
A legitimate area page contains genuinely local content: the specific areas and postcodes covered, jobs you have actually done there, local considerations such as property types, parking or conservation area rules, response times to that area, and reviews from customers there.
A doorway page is the same 400 words with the town name swapped. Thirty of those will, sooner or later, get filtered out of the index entirely — and can drag the rest of the site with them. Fewer, better pages always win.
Citations and consistency
Your name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere they appear — Companies House, Checkatrade, Yell, Facebook, trade bodies, directories. Inconsistencies dilute the signal that all these listings refer to the same business.
It is tedious, one-off work with a genuine payoff. Do it once properly and then only update it when something actually changes.
What to do first, in order
- Complete and optimise the Google Business Profile properly. One afternoon, largest return.
- Automate review requests on job completion. One hour, compounding return forever.
- Build one strong page per core service. A week of writing, permanent return.
- Fix site speed and mobile experience. Ranking factor and conversion factor simultaneously.
- Clean up citations for consistency. Tedious, one-off, worth it.
- Add area pages only where you have genuinely local content to put on them.
