Why "virtual receptionist" spans such a wide price
The phrase covers three genuinely different things, which is why quotes range from under fifty pounds a month to several hundred. A human answering service, a self-serve AI tool and a managed AI plan are not the same product, and comparing their headline prices without knowing which you are looking at is how people end up disappointed.
All prices below were read from each supplier’s own published pricing page in September 2026, in whatever currency they publish in. Suppliers change prices, so treat these as the shape of the market rather than a live quote, and check the current figure before you buy.
Human answering services — pay for the minutes
Traditional services answer with real people, and you pay for their time. AnswerConnect publishes rates from around £205 to £395 a month for a block of minutes, then about £1.75 for each minute over. alldayPA works the same way — an included allowance plus a per-minute rate above it. Moneypenny answers with a dedicated human but does not publish a price at all; it is quote-only.
The advantage is a real voice, which genuinely matters for anxious or high-value callers. The catch is built into the model: the bill rises exactly when you are busiest, because you are paying by the minute. A quiet month is cheap; the month you most need cover is the month it costs most.
Self-serve AI — cheap, if you do the work
AI tools answer every call for a flat monthly fee, and the fee is low. In the UK, Ringmere publishes plans at £49, £99 and £249 plus VAT, and Hey Jodie at £49, £99 and £199 with unlimited minutes. From the US, Goodcall publishes $79, $129 and $249, My AI Front Desk $99 a month for 200 minutes with chat and SMS, and Rosie from $49 to $299.
The flat fee is the appeal: the busy month costs the same as the quiet one. The honest catch is the word self-serve. You write the scripts, connect the calendar, set the rules for what it must never do, and maintain it as your business changes. The sticker price is real; the total cost includes your time, and for the owner who does the revenue-earning work that time is the expensive part.
Managed AI plans — the outcome, not the tool
A managed plan is the AI plus someone to build it, write the scripts, connect it and keep it working — usually bundled with the website and follow-up rather than sold as a phone line on its own. Our own receptionist plans are Growth at £1,500 setup plus £497 a month and Full Managed at £2,500 plus £897, on rolling monthly terms; our £297 Starter plan covers the website, chatbot and follow-up without the receptionist.
It costs more than a self-serve tool because it is a different purchase: you are buying the result and someone who is still responsible for it in month nine, rather than a login and a weekend of your own setup time. Worth it if you want the outcome; not worth it if you genuinely enjoy configuring the tool yourself and have the hours.

The costs nobody puts in the quote
- Your own setup time. The biggest hidden cost in every self-serve option — scripts, calendar, rules, testing. Budget real hours, and value them at what your own time is worth.
- Per-minute creep. On a metered human service, the bill is smallest in the month you need it least. Model a busy month, not an average one.
- Maintenance. Prices, services and opening hours change. A receptionist — human or AI — that gives out last season’s information is worse than none.
- The safety line. In clinical, veterinary and food settings the script must know what it may never answer. Getting that wrong is a risk cost, not a service one, and it is real work to set up.
- Currency and VAT. A dollar price is not a fixed pound price, and a plus-VAT figure is not the number you pay. Compare like with like before you decide.
How to choose without overpaying
Ask which problem you are actually solving. If it is simply that calls go unanswered and you have time to set a tool up, a self-serve AI at £49 to £99 a month is the cheapest honest answer and often all you need. If a real human voice is part of what you sell, a human service earns its metered bill. If you want it to work without becoming your job — and to still work in six months — a managed plan is what you are paying for. The wrong buy is a cheap tool nobody owns, quietly giving callers the wrong answer.
